A World Treasure Next Door: The Okefenokee Joins the UNESCO World Heritage List

A landmark moment has arrived for Southeast Georgia: the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has officially been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The decision, made on July 25, 2026, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, places the Okefenokee among the most extraordinary natural and cultural places on Earth. It is Georgia’s first World Heritage Site and the first national wildlife refuge in the United States to receive the distinction.

For those of us who live beside the Okefenokee, the announcement confirms something generations of local families, naturalists, scientists, paddlers, hunters, anglers and visitors have long understood: this is no ordinary landscape.

The Okefenokee is the world’s largest lowland freshwater peatland in the subtropical zone and one of the most intact ecosystems remaining in the North American Coastal Plain. Its vast mosaic of blackwater wetlands, prairies, forests and longleaf pine savannas supports exceptional biodiversity, including hundreds of plant and bird species, dozens of mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians, and a significant population of American alligators.

Yet facts and figures can only begin to describe the experience of being here.

The Okefenokee is the stillness of a sunrise over dark water. It is the call of sandhill cranes, the reflection of cypress trees and clouds, and the sudden appearance of an alligator slipping silently beneath the surface. It is a place where fire, water, wildlife and time continue to shape the land much as they have for thousands of years.

This recognition is also the culmination of an extraordinary, multigenerational effort. The campaign to achieve World Heritage status began more than four decades ago and was carried forward by scores of dedicated individuals and organizations. Scientists, conservationists, refuge staff, nonprofit leaders, public officials, community advocates, donors, business owners and neighbors all contributed to the nomination and helped tell the Okefenokee’s story to the world.

To each of them, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude. This inscription is a tribute not only to the swamp itself, but also to the perseverance of those who believed it deserved the world’s highest level of recognition.
